Ray is more than a building.
It’s a place.
Whether you live here or just plan on hanging out, Ray makes sure art and culture are never far.
We really obsessed over every detail.
Using honest, organic materials and a natural palette, Ray aims to blend elevated design with practicality. We want to reimagine what the modern home can be.
Blonde oak floors. Light flooded spaces. Laundry in every unit. Because generic apartments don’t cut it anymore.
Ray Phoenix offers a collection of penthouse homes starting at a generous 1,600 square feet. This limited offering of residences includes upgraded features such as top of the line appliances, unique spacious layouts, elevated finishes, plus a retractable wall of windows, revealing panoramic views from the Camelback Mountains to the City skyline.

Recent projects undertaken by Johnston Marklee include the new, permanent home for the Whitney Museum of American Art’s Independent Study Program (ISP) at Roy Lichtenstein Studio in New York’s Greenwich Village; a renovation of the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago; among others.
The Building
Johnston Marklee & Associates, in partnership with Lamar Johnson Collaborative, conceptualized the building’s primitive form, clear structure, and textured green palette to be animated by the changing light and shadow of the desert skies that marks the landscape of the west.
The building establishes an engaging street presence through its retail storefront, an inviting addition to the downtown Phoenix streetscape. Grace Fuller Marroquín of Grace Fuller Design conceived the landscape concept for Ray Phoenix, focusing on an aridly lush yet ecologically sound landscape design, with an emphasis on the use of native species and blending of the exterior landscape approach with the interior amenity design. The building interior was designed by Ray's in-house design team in collaboration with Parts & Labor.
Alex Israel
Alex Israel (b. 1982, Los Angeles) earned a B.A. from Yale University, Connecticut, and an M.F.A. from University of Southern California, Roski School of Fine Arts, Los Angeles. Israel’s works are included in major museums and private collections worldwide, including: Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Moderna Museet, Stockholm; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam; The Israel Museum, Jerusalem; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; and Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York.
The Art
Each of Alex Israel's murals is hand-painted by scenic artists in a style once commonly adopted by movie studios to make backdrops, before the rise in digital special effects. They highlight plants and objects as characters, but also frame the potential action that might ensue before them when a viewer becomes the character in their scene.
For Ray Phoenix, Israel is creating a site-specific mural featuring desert rocks and flora, inspired by the landscape in and around Phoenix and his hometown of Los Angeles. Similar work has been exhibited at Le Consortium in Dijon, France (2013) UCCA in Beijing, China (2014), and hotel Le Sirenuse in Positano, Italy (2017).
